Definitie

De trend enhanced diagnostics beschrijft nieuwe diagnostische technologieën die verder gaan dan de conventionele methoden. Dankzij enhanced diagnostics is het mogelijk om symptomen of condities sneller, makkelijker of beter te analyseren. Toepassingen binnen enhanced diagnostics verschillen van de trend DIY Diagnostics, omdat de uitvoering veelal bij de zorgprofessional ligt.

 

Toepassingen & voordelen

De toepassingen van enhanced diagnostics variëren van simpele dagelijkse metingen tot complexe analyses. Hierbij kan gebruik worden gemaakt van bijvoorbeeld vocale biomarkers, of vluchtige organische componenten (VOC) in uitgeademde lucht [1,2]. Specifieke vocale biomarkers worden gelinkt aan depressie, coronaire hartziekten, angst, de ziekte van Parkinson en autismespectrumstoornissen [3,4]. De analyse van ademhalingscomponenten kan onder andere worden gelinkt aan diabetes, astma en longkanker [5-7]. De diagnostische toepassingen van enhanced diagnostics zijn veelal non-invasief en kunnen sneller, effectiever en goedkoper zijn dan conventionele methoden. Daarnaast is het mogelijk om preventief te handelen naar aanleiding van eenvoudige diagnostiek.

 

Markt

De markt van enhanced diagnostics groeit. Naar verwachting neemt de mondiale marktwaarde van bijvoorbeeld vocale biomarkers toe tot een bedrag van $4,2 miljard in 2027. In 2019 bedroeg de globale marktwaarde nog $1,3 miljard. De groei wordt onder andere veroorzaakt door de toenemende prevalentie van psychische aandoeningen en hart- en vaatziekten [8]. Ook de kosteneffectiviteit drijft de markt. De markt voor vocale biomarkers is slechts één van de vele voorbeelden. Er is daarnaast bijvoorbeeld ook sprake van een toename van de mondiale marktwaarde voor non-invasieve kankerdiagnostiek: in de periode tussen 2021 en 2026 bedraagt de jaarlijkse groei naar verwachting bijna 7% [9].

Nieuwe diagnostiek invoeren is lastig. Door wet- en regelgeving is het moeilijk om in zorgstandaarden of richtlijnen opgenomen te worden en om een vergoede toepassing te worden. Als gevolg van groeiende acceptatie voor nieuwe manieren van diagnostiek wordt de trend echter gesterkt. Daarnaast worden de technieken steeds slimmer en preciezer. Sinds de coronacrisis is er bovendien meer behoefte aan snelle, simpele en goedkope testen die beter schaalbaar zijn. Ook dit heeft een positieve invloed op het onderzoeksgebied [10].

 

Conclusie

De mogelijkheden voor enhanced diagnostics zijn divers en de bewijsvoering voor verschillende toepassingen groeit. Door middel van enhanced diagnostics wordt een stap gezet in de richting van snellere en betere diagnoses en daarmee ook in de richting van preventiever handelen.
