Definitie

Robotic care is de ondersteuning van patiënt, zorgprofessional of mantelzorger door middel van robotica. Hieronder vallen de technologische innovaties van de robotic operations niet onder, want die vinden plaats in een klinische setting.

 

Toepassingen & voordelen

Zorgrobots kunnen verschillende rollen vervullen. Ze kunnen thuiswonende patiënten monitoren of ondersteunen bij fysieke activiteiten [1-3]. De robots kunnen ook gezelschap bieden en ingezet worden om eenzaamheid tegen te gaan [4-7]. Veel robots combineren praktische en sociale rollen. Door gegevens te verzamelen, te verwerken en te analyseren kunnen robots daarnaast inzicht geven in het welbevinden van de patiënt [8]. Dit geeft de mogelijkheid voor patiënten en ouderen om langer thuis te wonen met een grotere kwaliteit van leven. Ze vergroten de autonomie, de zelfredzaamheid en het mentaal welzijn van de individu [9,10]. Zorgrobots hebben voordelen ten opzichte van menselijke professionals: ze staan 24/7 klaar, hebben eindeloos geduld en maken geen fouten [11]. Zorgrobots ontlasten uiteindelijk zowel naasten en mantelzorgers als zorgprofessionals [12,13].

 

Markt

De marktwaarde van overkoepelende robotische systemen in de zorg, waar bijvoorbeeld ook chirurgische robots onder vallen, bedroeg $8,3 miljard in 2020 en stijgt naar verwachting tot $28,4 miljard in 2026. Dit komt onder andere door de positieve verandering in de opvattingen over het gebruik van robots en de (dubbele) vergrijzing [14]. Ook de marktwaarde van robotic care neemt toe: naar verwachting bedraagt deze $1,5 miljard in 2027, terwijl het in 2019 nog $650 miljoen bedroeg [13,15]. Naar schatting nemen robotic care toepassingen in 2040 60% van de zorgactiviteiten over van zorgprofessionals, vooral bij ouderen thuis [17-19].

Robots worden breder toegankelijk en kwalitatief beter. Robots die menselijke interactie ondersteunen verlichten de zorgdruk. Dit werd bijvoorbeeld duidelijk tijdens de coronacrisis: robots konden eenzame ouderen toen gezelschap houden [20]. Robots kunnen ook ondersteunen door klusjes uit te voeren en ze worden daardoor in groeiende mate geaccepteerd. Wanneer ethische en privacyvraagstukken zijn beantwoord is de weg vrij voor grootschalige implementatie.

 

Conclusie

Toepassingen in robotic care worden geavanceerder en betrouwbaarder. De noodzaak van een alternatief voor overbelaste zorgprofessionals en mantelzorgers groeit en grootschalige adoptie van robotic care is slechts een kwestie van tijd. Robotic care leidt uiteindelijk tot een autonoom systeem dat zorgt voor een betere gezondheid voor de patiënt, een betere ervaring voor de zorgprofessional en lagere zorgkosten.
