Definitie

Remote monitoring omvat technologieën waarmee zorgprofessionals patiënten op afstand kunnen monitoren.

 

Toepassingen & voordelen

Remote monitoring geeft patiënten veel regie en mogelijkheden tot participatie [1,2]. Verschillende toepassingen van remote monitoring worden ingezet om herstel te bevorderen en achteruitgang van aandoeningen te voorkomen. Patiënten en zorgprofessionals worden direct geïnformeerd en kunnen tijdig beslissingen nemen in het zorgproces [3,4]. Een ander voordeel van monitoring op afstand is dat de patiënt langer thuis kan blijven, waardoor onder andere de kans op infecties wordt verkleind [5,6]. Ook in de klinische setting kan remote monitoring zorgprofessionals helpen eerder in te grijpen [7]. Hierdoor vermindert het aantal (her)opnames, de opnameduur en de zorglast [8]. Daarnaast wordt niet alleen de kwaliteit van leven van de patiënt, maar ook de veiligheid, efficiëntie en effectiviteit van de zorg bevorderd [3,4,9-12]. De kwaliteit van de zorg en autonomie van de patiënt worden gestimuleerd [11,13] en de toepassing van de technologie draagt daarmee uiteindelijk bij aan verbeterde medische uitkomsten [12,14] en lagere zorgkosten [3,4,11,15,16].

 

Markt

De mondiale martkwaarde van patient remote monitoring bedraagt in 2021 $1,2 miljard. Naar verwachting stijgt dit tot $4,1 miljard in 2028 [17, 18]. In 2017 werden ruim 16,5 miljoen patiënten op afstand gemonitord. Naar verwachting stijgt dit aantal naar 83,4 miljoen in 2023 [19]. In 2017 gebruikten 10,7 miljoen patiënten hun eigen smartphone of tablet als toepassing van remote monitoring. Naar verwachting groeit dit naar 40,3 miljoen in 2023 [19].

De mogelijkheden om mensen op afstand te monitoren nemen toe, onder andere omdat het aantal chronisch zieken stijgt en kwetsbaren steeds langer thuis wonen. Als gevolg hiervan neemt de druk op het zorgsysteem toe. De meetapparatuur komt achter de voordeur van het individu, maar ondanks de twijfels rondom privacy groeit de acceptatie voor remote monitoring. Ook tijdens de coronacrisis is de waarde van remote monitoring gebleken: Covid-19 patiënten konden in hun isolatiekamers blijven – en daarmee verspreiding van het virus voorkomen – maar nog steeds goed gemonitord worden [20].

 

Conclusie

Remote-monitoringtoepassingen vergroten de regie van de patiënt en stuwen de beweging naar de empowered patient.
