Carmat developed an artificial heart that consists of two heart chambers, just like a normal heart. The artificial heart is supported by a motorised pump that circulates hydraulic fluid, allowing the user’s blood to flow through the heart. Carmat developed the world’s first artificial heart that adjusts to the user’s activity, e.g. by beating faster during physical exercise. This is made possible by microprocessors and sensors. The heart weighs around 900 grams and the developers ultimately hope to replace heart transplantations entirely. The product benefits both users and healthcare institutions. The first patients including an American and an Italian received this artificial heart in July 2021.
