Foldit is an online computer game in which gamers together contribute towards scientific research by unravelling protein structures. Proteins can fold themselves in an astronomical number of configurations and finding the best structure is one of the greatest challenges in biological research. Foldit allows gamers to predict the structure of a protein using their ‘puzzle-solving intuition’. By including a competitive element in the games, solutions are found much more quickly than previously.
