The Centrella Smart+ Bed is a clever hospital bed. Sensors under the mattress keep track of heart and breathing rates with no nuisance to the patient. The readings are made over 100 times per minute and transmitted in real time to a receiving station elsewhere. Threshold values can be set for each vital sign variable, and nursing staff are alerted whenever those lines are crossed. The use of the bed has been found to be associated with mortality reductions of over 80 per cent
in episodes of reanimation and heart attack. The bed can also aid in the early detection of life-threatening sepsis.
