BerkelBike

The BerkelBike is a bicycle which people with paraplegia, hemiplegia, MS, Parkinsons or an amputation can still use to cycle. The bike is a sitting bicycle and combines arm-and leg power in order to move forwards. Using special cycling trousers and Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES), users that don’t have sufficient strength in their arms or legs can use the bike. Through electrical stimulation, muscles are triggered to move and to power the bicycle. BerkelBike has succeeded in applying FES to a bike that actually partakes in traffic, instead of only on a hometrainer, which means patients have more freedom of movement. They also stay fit and even build muscle mass.
